Your Tesla and other electric vehicles have a 12V auxiliary battery that needs replacement every 3 to 5 years. We replace this small battery, not the main battery pack. Same-day mobile service at your home or office.
Get Your PriceEvery Tesla and electric vehicle has two battery systems. The large high-voltage battery pack, often 60 to 100 kWh, powers the electric motors and provides the range you see on the display. But there is also a small 12-volt auxiliary battery that most EV owners do not think about until it fails.
This 12V battery powers everything that is not directly related to moving the car: the computer systems, door locks, lights, infotainment, climate controls, and the mechanisms that let you open the doors. Without a working 12V battery, your Tesla or EV cannot wake up, cannot open its doors, and cannot start. The main battery pack might be fully charged, but a dead 12V battery leaves you stranded.
We replace the 12V auxiliary battery only. We do not service or replace the main high-voltage battery pack. That work requires specialized equipment and certification. The 12V battery is a standard automotive repair that any qualified technician can perform.
Tesla 12V batteries work harder than batteries in traditional cars. They power the car's computers continuously, even when the car is parked. Features like Sentry Mode, climate monitoring, and over-the-air updates keep the 12V battery working around the clock. In South Dakota winters, the battery also powers the cabin pre-conditioning system when you warm up your car remotely.
While the main battery can recharge the 12V battery, this charging relationship has limits. Cold temperatures reduce the 12V battery's capacity. Extreme heat during summer charging degrades the battery over time. The constant cycling wears out the battery faster than in traditional vehicles where the 12V battery primarily starts the engine.
Tesla usually displays a warning on the touchscreen when the 12V battery is weak. Do not ignore this warning. Other symptoms include door handles that respond slowly or not at all, the car not waking up when you approach with your phone key, the touchscreen rebooting randomly, phantom drain on the main battery, or the car simply not responding at all. In cold weather, a marginal 12V battery can fail suddenly without warning.

The Model 3 and Model Y use a lithium-ion 12V battery located under the rear seat (Model 3) or in the front trunk area (Model Y). These batteries are smaller and lighter than traditional lead-acid batteries but cost more. They typically last 4 to 6 years in ideal conditions, but South Dakota temperatures can shorten that lifespan. We stock replacement batteries for same-day service.
Older Model S and Model X vehicles use traditional 12V lead-acid batteries located in the front trunk. Newer versions may use lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries are more affordable but heavier. We verify which type your specific vehicle uses before arriving. Both battery types are available for same-day replacement in most cases.
