Why shops turn your BMW away
European brakes are not complicated, but they do require a scan tool. Most BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes built after 2010 have an electronic parking brake that locks the rear calipers in place. Without the right diagnostic tool to retract them, you cannot remove the pads. That is why the corner shop says no thanks.
Then there are the wear sensors. They are one-time-use wires built into the pad. Snap one during removal and you have a permanent warning light. OE pads also use a specific compound that matches the rotor metallurgy. Swap in cheap pads and you get noise, dust, or premature wear.
